The Holmes and Rahe Stress Scale

Over the more then ten years working as an osteopath and body-centred stress coach I often get people that come with acute back pain after a trivial movement, like picking up a towel or tying shoelaces. This is for me a sign that the body has gone or through a trauma or that stress has been accumulating for some time.

So asking about life-changes they went through it is usually 3 to 4 months earlier that something major had happened in their life.
  • Divorce or separation
  • Moved country to start a new job opportunity
  • ...
At first I didn't really see the relationship between the life change and the cause of the pain until I encountered the Holmes and Rahe Stress Scale.

"In 1967, psychiatrists Thomas Holmes and Richard Rahe examined the medical records of over 5,000 medical patients as a way to determine whether stressful events might cause illnesses. Patients were asked to tally a list of 43 life events based on a relative score. A positive correlation of 0.118 was found between their life events and their illnesses."

Try it yourself and if you have more than 300 points on this scale I highly recommend a Body-centred Stress Coaching session even if you don't have acute physical symptoms yet.

The body is a finely timed instrument that does not like surprises. Any sudden change stimuli which affects the body, or the reordering of important routines that the body become used to, can cause needless stress, throwing your whole physical being into turmoil.

The following chart will give you some idea of how to informally score yourself. Since being healthy is the optimum state you want to achieve, being or becoming sick is the state of being you most want to avoid and prevent.
